Epsom Downs Primary School has recently been awarded our National Nurturing Schools Award. As part of a whole school nurture approach the Boxall Profile® is becoming an established tool at the school.

The shift from paper to online assessments
Historically the school used both paper and online assessments for children with an EHCP (Education and Health Care Plan). This was then widened to include two pupils with SEMH (social emotional and mental health) concerns from each class. Miss Smith explained that the school will be moving to using the online version and exploring the new features. All teachers and support staff will be trained in how to assess children and analyse the results using the Boxall Profile® Online in early 2025. New members of staff will also be given training as part of their induction.
A whole school approach
The commitment to adopting the Boxall Profile® Online school-wide underscores its effectiveness as a tool for understanding and addressing student needs. The school ELSA (Emotional Literacy Support Assistant) highlighted its value, saying, “Boxall is used as a really helpful tool helping us triage and decide the intervention.” The enthusiasm among the staff is palpable, with Bernice affirming, “All teachers are enthusiastic to unpick the children’s behaviors. The Boxall is recognised by staff as the tool to do this.” This whole-school approach ensures a consistent and supportive environment for all students.
Developing a responsive curriculum
She continued to share, “Staff have the understanding that there are many external factors that may impact on a child’s development. She made it clear that they don’t just gather the data but use the data to plan universal and targeted interventions. This has enabled staff to develop a curriculum that is based around their children’s needs. This was reinforced by a Support Assistant who said, “information from the Boxall Profile® is also shared with other professionals as part of the team around the child.”
