Rachael Spain, Pastoral, Wellbeing and Learning Interventions Officer at Brynteg School shares the fantastic progress of a secondary aged pupil with support of the Boxall Profile® Online and nurture.

Nurture at Brynteg School

Brynteg School’s nurture group is a secondary provision with 102 pupils in need of support, so it is not your classic Boxall Nurture Group®, due to the sheer volume of pupils in need. It is led by Rachael, and she is supported by two Learning Support Officers. A typical nurture pupil would attend every breakfast, break and lunch time, in addition to receiving one or two-hour sessions each week.

Pupil profile

Rachael explains that the pupil is a member of their nurture group. The pupil is a Looked After Child (LAC) who has experienced significant Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACES) and is also Neurodiverse (ND).

Boxall Profile® Online assessment progress:

The pupil was first assessed in 2022 and has made significant progress between assessment 1 (2022) and 3 (2024), with the foundations of basic executive functioning skills and emotional development now established.

Learning plans were created to focus on the target areas of development highlighted in each assessment, with the strategies and resources supporting the activities within the nurture group.

How long were they in your nurture group for?

The pupil initially attended the nurture provision on a daily basis for emotional check-ins, social times, and weekly nurture group sessions. Despite his progress, due to him being LAC and ND, we have maintained the social time provision; he usually attends lunch time twice a week, but for the majority, he chooses to play sports on the field with friends.
